Open Positions at TSLR - Join Our Team

Here at TSLR we’re busy gearing up for Issue Five, slated to come out in the fall of this year (we’re making some slight adjustment to our publication schedule starting this year). Another of our team’s missions in the next few months, however, is to expand our staff and grow each section, as well as find dedicated people for specific roles that now, after two years, we’ve realized we shouldn’t be trying to do all on our own.

Below are the openings that we’d like to fill this year at TSLR. If you’re interested in joining our team, or if you have other ideas about how you might be able to get involved, send us an email at shanghailiterary@gmail.com by March 1, 2019 with a note about why the role interests you, your engagement with TSLR thus far, and your CV attached.

Please note that all roles at TSLR are volunteer-based and work is remote (as we are a small publication run on passion with few meetings, no office, and an editorial board across three continents), and the roles require commitment of at least one issue production cycle, or about 7-8 months.

  • Managing Editor - TSLR seeks a deadline-driven, reliable editor with a love for organization and time management to join as our Managing Editor. The Managing Editor will work closely with our Editor in Chief to create schedules and a business plan, organize materials for production, communicate deadlines to the team, and overall run the coordination and management of our network of Editors and Assistants.

  • Translation Associate - An editorial associate in Translation should have experience and interest in literary translation; the work will be dedicated to sourcing and reading, as well as editing translation pieces for TSLR, working alongside or with guidance from Mike Fu, our Translation Editor.

  • Fiction Associate - An editorial associate in Fiction should have experience and interest in editing short fiction; the work will be dedicated to sourcing and reading, as well as editing fiction pieces for TSLR, working alongside or with guidance from Juli Min, our Fiction Editor.

  • Events, US (New York) / Shanghai / London / Paris - TSLR holds several events annually in New York and Shanghai, including readings, launches, and social gatherings. Events teams will be responsible for generating ideas, reaching out to venues, and overall planning and logistics. Support for conferences and festivals, as well as ideas for events in new locations where we have editorial presence (London and Paris) are welcome. Also, if you're interested in being a dedicated regular Master of Ceremonies at TSLR open mics and readings, please reach out.

  • Social Media Editor - TSLR seeks a literature-loving, social-media savvy, witty caption writing editor to maintain our social media presences (Facebook, Twitter, WeChat, website, Instagram), upload work to our website, write posts, network with online communities, and push stories through to our channels.

  • Copyeditor - The copyeditor’s main task will be to proofread carefully and 2-3 times the full magazine, checking for grammatical and stylistic errors in accordance with TSLR’s Style Guide.

  • Editorial Assistants - Editorial Assistants assist with administrative and editorial tasks related to the magazine, including shadow editing on one piece per issue with a chosen editor, transcribing interviews, assisting with events, etc.
