Open Mic Night w TSLR

TSLR will be hosting an open mic this Saturday evening in Shanghai, starting 7:30pm, at My Place Ruin Bar, 1788 Xinzha Lu, 3F. (Enter the Singaporean restaurant, go straight through and up the stairs)

We'll kick off the evening with some fun and generative writing exercises, and then we'll jump into our readings.

Bring your best poetry, translations, stories, and essays, and sign up to read to a supportive crowd of fellow writers and art lovers. Or just come to listen and relax with new friends. The bar serves drinks and food. We'll have TSLR Issues on sale if you'd like to browse or shop the journal.

Come at 7:30pm to sign up for a reading slot, or email shanghailiterary@gmail.com to pre-reserve a slot. Please limit readings to 5 minutes, including introductory remarks. Original work only please.

TSLR @AAWW Recap

Last week, The Shanghai Literary Review had our American launch party in New York City. The Asian American Writer’s Workshop hosted the event, which consisted of readings from TSLR Issue 2 and a Q&A panel with a few of our editors. Mike Fu, our Translation Editor, led the event.

The audience was treated to readings from Joy Huang Stoffers, Jeremy Tiang, Jianan Qian, Julie Wenglinski, and Nancy Huang. The Q&A between the audience and Translation Editor, Mike Fu; Book Review Editor, Brian Haman; and Editor in Chief/Fiction Editor, Juli Min, delved into the intricacies of publishing a print magazine in a digital world, searching for the spirit of Shanghai in literary works, and the challenge of translating Chinese works while preserving meaning, among other topics. The event is available for viewing on both the TSLR and AAWW Facebook pages, and the full video of the event is below.

TSLR would like to thank the readers for their beautiful contributions and the Asian American Writer’s Workshop for hosting such a successful event.

Call for Submissions - TSLR 3, Summer 2018 Edition

We're back at it again! Our next print issue comes out in summer 2018, and the team at TSLR have been happily reading incoming submissions. 

The deadline to submit for our winter print issue is February 15. Please mosey on over to our Submittable page to send in your work.

We are interested in art and criticism about urbanism, globalism, identity, and transnationalism, though by no means should submissions be limited to those topics. We'll publish a good story about cats in Africa if it floors us. Selected works will be published in print and after a delay, all pieces will be available online as well. TSLR sells in a growing number of stores in New York, Los Angeles, Shanghai, Beijing, and London. 

We publish: 

• Fiction - less than 5,000 words
• Poetry - 2 poems submission limit per person
• Non-Fiction - less than 5,000 words
• Flash Fiction / Non-Fiction - less than 500 words
• Visual Art - photography, video, photo essay, collage, painting, sketch, etc.
• Translation - translation into English of any poetry, essay or short fiction, or vice versa, along with the original text
• Book Review - pitch book review ideas to tslrbookreviews@gmail.com 

To submit online, please visit our online submissions manager. 

We will only publish previously unpublished pieces. Simultaneous submissions are acceptable. Please just let us know promptly if your submission has been accepted elsewhere. All published authors of the print edition will be mailed a hard copy of their magazine at no cost.

Translators, please provide documentation of authorization to translate and publish from the writer whom you are translating.
